WOMEN’S SMOKE SAUNA NIGHT

‘
Last Wednesday evening I had an interesting work assignment. We – the writing journalist and I – took part in a happening meant for only women. The program of the evening included sitting by a fire, drinking coffee (made on that fire), listening to interesting stories, chatting, smoke sauna and swimming in a frozen lake. The place was really nice, I love a good smoke sauna! And the tepee where the fire was lit was rather nice too.
The whole place was in the middle of nowhere. The road just kept getting smaller and smaller and there were no lights or anything anywhere. It was strange and weird and beautiful. All of a sudden some fires where there on the road side to show the way to the sauna and tepee. There’s no electricity or running water or anything in there. Just the nature and silence and darkness. When we got closer the silence was broken by merry welcoming voices. The darkness was diminished here and there by a lantern or a candle. Still, it was very very very dark. Despite the lanterns it was hard to see where the paths were. Very challenging circumstances to shoot indeed!
The idea of our story was not to report about the atmospheric place or the happenings of the evening. We where there to get those women to talk about men – especially about fathers and fatherhood. The story was published on father’s day in the Sunday extra of Satakunnan Kansa. By Sunday extra I mean the tabloid sized Sunday extra that comes inside the regular Sunday issue of Satakunnan Kansa. It has longer and more in depth stories than the regular news paper. And it comes out every Sunday. Ummm.. I’m so bad at explaining stuff in english. Maybe I should switch to finnish!
Aaaanyway… it was a really fun gig. We got to go to smoke sauna too. It was wonderful! And I braved the icy lake. Let’s just say that it was refreshing!
